Over 3,000 government officials, monks, nuns, and international delegations attended this 2-day conference. The Prime Minister of Nepal, the Honorable Mr. KP Sharma Oli, was the chief guest and speaker.
Among the speakers, H.E. Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche spoke about Lumbini as the "birthplace of peace" and a positive force in promoting interfaith harmony and peaceful co-existence:
"The Buddha's intention was not to convert others to a set of beliefs, but rather to convey a means to recognize one’s true intelligence and pass beyond stress and suffering. This pure aspiration without agenda is the basis for all harmonious interchange between those of various faiths and differing beliefs. The Buddha taught his followers to have this pure vision and respect all religions and sects."
In commemoration of the 2,560th Buddha Jayanti (Buddha's birthday, enlightenment and paranirvana), the government of Nepal, along with several Buddhist organizations including Bhrikuti Himalayan Foundation, held a 3-day conference in Kathmandu and Lumbini, Nepal. The theme of the conference was: Lumbini, Nepal: the Birthplace of Lord Buddha as the fountainhead of Buddhism and World Peace.
On May 19 and 20, a panel of Buddhist scholars and professors of Buddhist studies and archeology presented papers and gave presentations, related to Lumbini and its spiritual and historical significance.
